WooCommerce High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS) moves orders out of classic posts into dedicated tables. Custom plugins that still get_post_meta( $order_id, … ) or query shop_order posts will break—or silently lie—after enablement.
What must change
- Read/write orders via CRUD /
wc_get_order()APIs, not raw post SQL. - Order meta through order object methods.
- Custom reports: join HPOS tables or use Woo analytics APIs.
- Integrations (ERP, Zendesk, HubSpot) must not assume
wp_posts.post_type = shop_order.
Compatibility checklist
- Enable HPOS on staging with a production data clone.
- Run your sync jobs: create, update, refund, failed payment.
- Verify admin order search and custom columns.
- Load-test checkout + bundle flows (see also BundleFlow Pro if bundling is in scope).
Migration tip
Do not “just flip HPOS” on Black Friday week. Ship code that is dual-compatible first, then enable storage, then remove legacy paths.
